I watched a program on this and its effects in the States - it was quite sad to see. I had not appreciated the extent of the industry and how certain crops were absolutely dependent on bees - apples for example, would disappear from supermarkets (apparently).
One particular part of the program was very worrying - the biggest industrial bee keeper was so afraid to lose his bees that he transported them all to the middle of nowhere, away from all human contact and farming. The hives stretched to the horizon across a vast plain and he believed he had managed to isolate them. They were fine there for around 6 months (I think) when suddenly the majority of the bees just disappeared.
