He was in for another 5 years - they sold cause he asked to leave ...

I agree though - he's irreplaceable at the moment.

Image rights - here's a good post fromt he Barcelona finance dude:

Barcelona finance director Xavier Sala i Martin is bewildered as to how Real Madrid are funding their summer spending spree.

With a reported transfer budget of 300million euros at their disposal, Madrid president Florentino Perez has this week set about creating a second 'galacticos' era.

The Spanish giants had a world-record bid of £80million for Portugal winger Cristiano Ronaldo accepted by Manchester United on Thursday, hot on the heels of Monday's 68million euros acquisition of Brazil playmaker Kaka from AC Milan.

And Sala i Martin, whose team finished nine points clear of Madrid at the Primera Division summit last month, is puzzled by how the purchases are being financed.

He told Radio Station RAC1: "I don't know where the 300million euros that Florentino Perez expects to invest on signings are coming from.

"He says he will recover that money by selling shirts but, in order to do that, he will have to sell 30million shirts. That is impossible."

Sala i Martin is stunned Madrid are able to spend so much money in such a difficult economic climate.

He added: "I guess someone will have to give him that money and it would be good for him to explain where it will come from.

"How can it be that a football team is loaned so much money, considering the current financial crisis in the country and the policy of restricting credits that banks are currently following?

"I can assure you that we will not pay 65million euros for a player.

"For that amount we would buy the whole Barcelona team that won the Champions League in Rome."

I wouldn't pay much attention to Barcelona's sniping - they're also in a the position to buy in great players (Messi, Henry,Hleb etc).

The Business behind Real Madrid's Deal:

business week article on Kaka move

Forking out $90 million when Spain’s economy is in the doldrums may sound like madness. But according to Simon Chadwick, director of the Centre for the International Business of Sport at Coventry University in Britain, Kaká could generate $100 million in extra annual revenue for Real Madrid through shirt sales, sponsorship, and match ticket sales. That means Pérez could recoup his investment in just one year — not a shabby investment proposition.
Incidentally one advantage Real Madrid and Barcelona have over British clubs, is they negotiate their own tv rights (instead of the rights being spread over various clubs as happens with EPL clubs).

But the core point is valid - where's the money coming from?

          They're a members club - perez doesn't put his own money in - they're self financing ...

To repeat what I'd put in previous link.

            http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8094864.stm

Growing match-day revenues, increasingly shrewd and global marketing, healthy commercial income, and a ground-breaking domestic TV deal, have all catapulted the club to the peak of the Deloitte's Football Money League this year.

They have topped it for the past four straight years, despite being overshadowed in the Champions League by their bitter rivals Barcelona.

              What a strange world.

Mate - they made 292 million euros in the last one.

The transfers alone for kaka and ronaldo are what - 110 million euro. Then agent fees, wages etc, plus they have a few other players on their books ...

Their is a valid argument to say this is a bit mental, financially speaking.

Mr Currie said Real were targeting the world's best players who were also the world's most marketable players.

                    'Fickle allegiance'

That, Mr Currie added, meant that in emerging markets fans may swap allegiance, from - for example - Manchester United to Real Madrid, simply because they preferred to support star players rather than clubs.

"They are far more fickle in terms of allegiance," he said. "But it is not about Real looking to sell more merchandising in places like China, in fact they would not make a great deal from doing that.

"They are looking to make money from these signings by maximising their future overseas TV rights," says Mr Currie.

"There will be massive TV deals coming up for them overseas in the next few years, that is the big carrot.

"With the developments this week Real Madrid will already have restored their profile and status to number one in these emerging markets.

"And the team that has the most marketable players, and the most supporters, will get the best TV deals."

                    'Important role'

The television money, both overseas and at home, is crucial to Real's recent surge in income in recent years.

Since 1997 Spanish clubs have sold their own rights individually.

Real Madrid signing its latest deal in 2006, for a reported record 1.1bn euros deal with Spanish film and TV company Mediapro for seven seasons of broadcast rights.

That works out at a huge 150m euros a year.

"Spanish television rights have increased significantly in the past three years, and would no doubt play an important role in these large Real Madrid transfers," says James Pickles, editor of industry journal TV Sports Markets.

                    Big name sponsors

But overseas merchandising, domestic and TV rights, and matchday earnings are not Real's only income streams.

It also has a number of high profile sponsorship partners - Bwin.com, Adidas, Coca-Cola, Audi, and Spanish beer brand Mahou.

An image rights deal with Adidas alone in early 2007 garnered them 762m euros.
Has to be said that Sr Perez increased Real's earning capability dramatically the last time he embarked on this galatico policy (and remember Real did win the big Euro cup in Zidane's first season). It all seems to depend on tv rights earning more and more for the club though.

Reckon Ronaldo and Kaka are any more marketable than Beckham ...
