I end up buying branded goods almost all of the time. I find that brands with a reputation for quality tend to live up to it.

That's not to say I'm slavish to it though - if I could find a pair of trousers in Primark that would last longer than 2 washes I would shop there.

My car is ten years old from new, my washer and my tumble drier are both 15 years old, my fridge is 10 years old, my oven is my mother's old gas oven which is 41 this year, and my TV is a 4 year old portable, and I make a point of never keeping up with the Jones's.
If something works I keep it until it doesn't any more. Only sad, shallow individuals get satisfaction out of material competition IMO, as it is simply a waste of money and the world's precious resources.
