I did the same 12 months ago. I can now say working for a consultancy is the worst type of employment possible. They try to sap your life and your morale, give you sh!t at every possible turn, dont support you when you need it and make you work 12 hours a day minimum, while not giving you time to learn about new technologies, but still sign you up for sales meetings to talk about the technology.

I have decided to return to the dark side.

My 3.5 year £400/day local gravy train is coming off the rails in a big way and there are no contracts locally in the last few months other than one over-subscribed £225/day role at a place which has signs outside that say 'Abandon all hope all ye who enter here'. No ta. There's not much within a couple of hours commute either.

So, with mouths to feed and mortgage to pay in mind, I've chased a permie consultancy role which is a move up the techie ladder, pays £60k and is all expenses paid with regular work from home. Got offered it yesterday

Once the market picks up I'll have skills that take me up a notch or two in rate. Or maybe I'll love permiedom again so much that I stick with it this time

That's only about £300,000 income, which, if we are talking London is hardly a deposit on a bedsit.

You need to earn 10x that to live in that there London.

What area are you specialising in?

Solution architecture, Java stack mainly. Current ClientCo is a consultancy and I've worked at other consultancies so I understand where you're coming from. But with the dire situation at ClientCo, sweet FA locally and the longer term in mind this is definitely the right move at the right time.

I've been looking for something for about 18 months now and its not the first job I've been offered, but yes, my war chest is not as healthy as it should be
