Funny thing this, my missus does it all the time. Just because someone asks for your opinion, it doesnt really mean they want your opinion.
Often they want you to say what they want to hear.

Indeed. Whenever anyone asks you to write a report, the first question to ask is - "what do you want the conclusion/recommendation to be?".

2 leave
3 moan and get thrown out
4 go permie
5 do something entirely different with your life

yes but that doesn't really solve the issue that you are asked to provide expert opinion and insight, then you get binned for doing just that, or binned if you don't deliver in your role as SME.

I think by that stage you're going to get binned anyway so just make sure you get in as many billable hours as possible.

You need to make the permie think that every idea you give him is his idea. Females are very a good at this (how many times has your wife been able to turn something that was her fault in to your fault?), but it isn't difficult, just a matter of wording it right. What it means is that you get what you want but you make them look good, they come to like you as a result of this and everyones a winner.

Of course the reality is that you shouldn't have to do this but its either that or bench time.
