So you do accept that it depends on the circumstances? Hallefookinlujah.

So Dodgy? Have you ever changed jobs? Sought more money? Moved close to home?

I just thought I'd chime in. I agree with Tino, Rookie and SA. And for the record I would do everything I could to not inconvenience ClientCo. Full professional handovers. In all truth there is nothing that I am that heavily into, all little snaggy bits. There is sizable work coming up, so if there was a "good" time to go then this is it.

I’m quite straight about this. If I’ve committed to the duration of a project or contract, I stick it out. Right now I’m spending 3 nights a week away from home but can work at home one day each week. Hopefully I can arrange to stay at home a little more once I’ve got the test project up and running here. It’s hard, but Mrs Tester’s realistic enough to realize that our lifestyle has to be paid for by me, and being flexible when the market demands that is the only way to pay the bills. After all, I’m a tester, not an heir to the throne, and my reputation is my living.
And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014

          Mich,

There would never be any circumstances which would make you waver from that stance?

Everyones threshold is different as to what they can and cannot handle. I'm 4 nights away from home with a baby whose less than one year old and that's difficult but 3 months is 3 months - I'm under no obligation to renew (Dodgy, is that acceptable to you - a Contractor refusing to renew due to a change in circumstances?)

Suityou01, just do what you have to do. You don't have to justify your actions or reasons to anyone but you and your loved ones.

I think in those circumstances there SHOULD be some give and take from both sides. If the customer refuses to budge, then don´t renew but at least fulfill the contract. Likewise, if someone´s been contracted for 3 months, the customer must be able to expect 3 months work without any hassle except in very exceptional circumstances like family tragedy or serious illness.

If you are looking for sympathy it can be found in a dictionary between tulip and syphilis.
I am miffed about clients dropping rates and etc during the current economic climate, but that is their perogative.

                Call yourselves contractors!!!

You accepted a 12 monther when your wife was heavily pregnant and had a small child to look after. You made that commiment knowing your circumstances so honour it.

It is not just your reputation and business you are damaging, but mine and everyone elses here. It is hard enough in the current climate to find work without clients being antagonised by contractors not honouring their contracts.

If you cant do the job then go and get a permie role round the corner and be at home 7 nights a week.
I am not qualified to give the above advice!

That's a fair point, but the OP will no doubt have his own reasons for doing this. At the end of the day, people have to do what's right for them - maybe it was his first gig away from home and he didn't appreciate how tough it can be, who knows?

You must surely agree that there are more important things in life than contracts though?

When I took the contract my wife was less heavily pregnant and thought she could cope. Chuck in a house move (that wasn't on the cards when I took the contract - and is a necessity) and the circumstances have changed for me. There are quite a few here sharing that ivory tower aren't there.

For info, one of the contractors here just got canned through no fault of her own. She was made the fall guy for an administrative cock up that was nothing to do with her. She had tried to point the problem out but had been ignored, and was canned while on holiday in Florida with her family. That was a nice call to receive! Then ClientCo refused to give her a reason for getting rid. Just ignored her calls. I found out through the grapevine what had happened.
