All this talk about bikes reminds me of my older brother. He had this bike with a fixed wheel. That means the pedals cannot idle.

The bike was miles to big for me but great fun for pushing along, jumping on the pedals then getting catapulted up into the seat

He got a bursty once and filled the tyre up with grass, so he could get home, can you still do that with todays tyres I wonder ?

Just done an hours spin on the fixed to try and get back in to some sort of shape.

Can't beat it - grind uphill, spin like a hamster in a wheel downhill.

Perfect chainline, no deadspots and virtually maintenance free, I rarely ride gears these days.

Yes, you can, but the problem nowadays is the rims are alu-alloy so they get a serrated edge and then cut the tire off.

Nowadays you can carry a large number of instant tire patches in a box so small it's fiddly to open, and use a small attachment on a sparklet to re-inflate tires near instantly. I don't think it has ever taken me more than a minute to fix a flat during a race.

Others carry spare tubes, and just leave the damaged tube where it dropped when they removed it. They do the change in seconds, no need for tools other than an inflater.
