A Solutions Architect otherwise known as a Systems Architect is a technical head of an engineering dept (in most cases). They have a lot of knowledge about everything basically.

Classic example is if you want to move a site (ie call centre). Solution architect will assess current and destination sites, assess technical requirements for the move and draw up technical plans. Then head up the actual engineering work to completion.

Some Java developers are getting £500 per day. The keyword alone is not the whole story, if you are really good and know things that others don't then it is possible to get well paid for it.

Bit like option 3 on the OP list I suppose.

            They do?

News to me, I touch on that world and don't ever remember seeing an £800 a day job, not even in the good times (700 maybe, 800 never).

I know a few IT trainers who pull in well in excess of £1k a day. But for that you need to know every little thing there is to know about a particular application, it's capabilities, and how it associates with the rest of the OS and other applications, and the typical needs of the users etc etc etc...

...and be able to effortlessly communicate with people IRL. Which may exclude some.
