Only very high end, extremely experienced Java devs get 500 (at least these days)....or maybe extraordinary developers in Algorithmic trading.

WHS java + specialist apps knowledge (murex/summit/fidessa/calypso etc.) = ££££ and will continue to be once projects get started again.

Only very high end, extremely experienced Java devs get 500 (at least these days)....or maybe extraordinary developers in Algorithmic trading.

Good point well made - you don't want to befuddle the rest of the trainees.
Although it has to be said that the trainers that get the large daily rates take attendees to the most advanced level, and sometimes that kind of info is required.

I agree with you about the top end trainers - when you get to that level then intimate knowledge of the tool/concept/field/technology is a pre-req....
At this level the training is often very low ratio 1:1 upto 1:3-4 so you are paying your Grand a day to teach one or two guys.......

That said there are many companies out there charging near a Grand per head per day for "classroom" courses (1:20+) in basic Desktop stuff!! Where the "Trainer" probably gets a good rate........ but the "Consultancy" gets tulip loads!!!!!

Although one trainer I know properly has OCD, and will make a point of memorising the entire application & features/capabilities. This takes him about 3 months of bench time, and he'll coin it for the next 2 years on that knowledge, or however long until the next version/a more popular product comes out, then it's back to the bench to acquire that knowledge.

He gets about £1.5k a day for this in the good times, maybe £750 when times are hard, or when he's new to a training co.

I understand he has to be tested himself to gain the accreditation from the vendors.

I know a few IT trainers who pull in well in excess of £1k a day. But for that you need to know every little thing there is to know about a particular application, it's capabilities, and how it associates with the rest of the OS and other applications, and the typical needs of the users etc etc etc...

...and be able to effortlessly communicate with people IRL. Which may exclude some.

I actually disagree - A good Trainer doesn't actually have to know much.. the skill in training is in presenting a course to the required level and imparting the required level of knowledge... The trainer themself may only just have a basic understanding...

One of the best skills that Good Trainers possess (and many IT Techie Geeks will never get) is NOT ANSWERING QUESTIONS......

If you are on an SQL course and you ask: How is this DBase organised?

The Good/Skilled Trainer will probably say "Your question may be answered later in the course but if it isn't I suggest we discuss that afterwards" or some such....
The Super DBA (who is giving the course cos he knows "everything") will start waffling on about Schemas, Unique Keys, Relationships and all sorts of twaddle......... there goes the whole day with no one really any the wiser (although the Trainees will either think the DBA is a Guru or a boring twunt!)
