Is Freemasonry a cult?

I've got one, any truth to the story that Freemasonary was an evolution of the Templars after they were persecuted?

Any truth?

None that has been proven.

There is much speculation but no concrete evidence. There are many "Templar" orders that claim direct descent but no masonic degree claims a direct link.
