It was a harsh penalty at the time, but under the new rules race victories are far more valuable so the penalty would have been even more extreme. I wonder if the stewards would have found another way to penalise him (grid penalty).
Secondly, if Hamilton absolutely had to get another win, maybe they would have pushed harder for one when they had previously played the points game (Singapore etc.).
The point being (as I made earlier) is that you can't replay the same game with different rules.
