He was probably just watching a (zombie) film while eating his sandwich during his lunch hour cause his wife doesn't like watching action flicks at home. Big deal.

Someone I was talking to last night : said she went to see someone at lunch yesterday : at his desk in a large IB in docklands. They have no internet blocking. The chap was eating a sandwich : watching a film of someone in a riot being hit with baseball bats : then was set alight.

She was shocked and complained : adding that she did not want to work with someone with that little moral standards.

She was a bit upset as that person likely to be sacked.

What would you have done?

Was working on a banking system a few years ago and there were some external links to advertisers. She clicked on one of these links and it showed a picture of a woman in a bikini. That was it, off she stormed complaining to anyone and everyone about being associated with a bank with links to porn sites !!

The actual site was an advert for students who wanted to work aboard. The actual pic was of a girl in a field in France holding a pitch fork - the advert was trying to portray the excellent weather. It wasn't a particular revealing bikini.

She did actually get the ad pulled, but her contract was not renewed.

Newsnight, few years back, South African black drug dealer got dragged out of house in township by mob, clubbed and set on fire. Showed the whole thing with sound!

Exactly, you have to go a few years back... hardly a common theme and I bet they had to preface it with "don't look unless you are a heartless sadist warnings", and STILL got a bunch of complaints.

I definitely believe the chap showed a complete lack of awareness in the workplace by watching such material, be it news or otherwise.

You need to adopt a mindful attitude at work, because other people cannot be trusted and have their own agendas, and anything you do can be miscontrued and used against you.

The chap needs to be constantly alert about how his behaviour might affect others, and position himself accordingly in the workplace.

That's just the way it is.

A friend worked as permie for an insurance company. Hotmail etc. was blocked so he used the work email for the odd personal stuff. Everyone did apparantly, but one day he received a slightly rude joke and forwarded it on. Next thing he knew he was hauled in front of a disciplinary panel where he got a written warning.

He and this other were just unlucky to get caught in the wheels of corporate 'rules'. It could happen to any of us; Christ knows I've watched some dodgy videos at work and send some pretty rude emails!

The answer IMO is a laptop + 3G Internet, and avoid letting people look at your screen.

I agree with BGG...

The chap was watching something inappropriate for a professional workplace....

...but then reporting it was inappropriate too.

Personally, I'd have kept my nose out of it...I don't get involved with office bollitics.
