I enjoy the puzzles pages of the Mail, the health pages, and the sports pages. I believe it is the most widely read newspaper in the UK, so there must be a lot of bigots around.
I don't think many Labour party people read the Mail but surely they must be the biggest bigots around with their blind hatred of anybody that has a 'toff' accent, has had the good fortune to go to public school or works hard for their wealth, while themselves screwing the parliamentary expenses system for every penny they can extort from the defenceless taxpayer.

Sounds like you are a reasonable person who is open to argument. Rather than a closed minded person who seeks to constantly reaffirm badly drawn comic stereotypes, because that is safe.
The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”

surprised to hear the FT "leftwing". That's the last thing I would call it. I would say it is liberal, i.e. believes in free markets and but socially liberal, which is I suppose "leftwing", to me CEO's with long hair in jeans sums up the FT.
        I'm alright Jack

I rather agree with that. I'm a leftie but I read the Telegraph regularly. It's well written and has some great columnists - Ambrose Evans-Pritchard is always a treat.

The Mail however is a vile organ (think Cybercretin's family jewels). Not only is it repugnant but the standard of reporting on matters such as healthcare (think MMR) is shocking.

Plus ça change etc. Here's some tidbits from the Mail's glorious past from wikipedia:

          'Inter-war period
In 1922, when Lord Northcliffe died, Lord Rothermere took full control of the paper.

In 1924 the Daily Mail published the forged Zinoviev Letter which indicated that British Communists were planning violent revolution. Many believed this was a significant factor in the defeat of Ramsay MacDonald's Labour Party in the 1924 general election, held four days later.

In early 1934, Rothermere and the Mail were editorially sympathetic to Oswald Mosley and the British Union of Fascists[10]. Rothermere wrote an article, "Hurrah for the Blackshirts", in January 1934, praising Mosley for his "sound, commonsense, Conservative doctrine"[11].

Rothermere was a friend and supporter of both Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler, which influenced the Mail's political stance towards them up to 1939.[12][13] Rothermere visited and corresponded with Hitler. On 1 October 1938, Rothermere sent Hitler a telegram in support of Germany's invasion of the Sudetenland, and expressing the hope that 'Adolf the Great' would become a popular figure in Britain.

In 1937, the Mail's chief war correspondent, George Ward Price, to whom Mussolini once wrote in support of him and the newspaper, published a book, I Know These Dictators, in defence of Hitler and Mussolini. Evelyn Waugh was sent as a reporter for the Mail to cover the anticipated Italian invasion of Ethiopia.

Rothermere and the Mail supported Neville Chamberlain's policy of appeasement, particularly during the events leading up to the Munich Agreement. After the Nazi invasion of Prague in 1939, the Mail changed its stance.'

Incidently, semi on topic, anyone noticed how even the Guardian is now anti Labour?

I think they will soon be going back to their true Liberal Democrat roots as they realize Labour has been a catastrophic failure and in no way represents their Neo-liberalist values.

Labour only really have the Daily Mirror left to fight their corner, even mr Murdoch has turned on McStalin!

Say what you like about the Daily Mail, but here's a summary of today's edition.

                Front Page

Iraqi War Secrets : What do they have to hide ?

I think it's reasonable to assume that most people in the country are concerned about this, and the paper is rightfully giving it giving it coverage.

A Labour wife and her disastrous fashion statement at the Queen Mum's Statue Unveiling.

Not what I'd call Front Page news, but nevertheless, it sums up Labour's distaste for the occassion.

Page 2 : One in every 9 people born overseas.

Talks about the growing numbers of foreign born people here in the UK. Not sure what the point was on this one, so I skipped it.

Page 2 : Asylum backlog going up again.

Didn't read it, because it just depresses me.

Page 3 : Tony Blair on an elephant.

Didn't read it. Can't stand the man.

Page 3 : Wogan on his way.

Did read. Shame to see an old veteran contemplating leaving the Beeb. Didn't know he was on 800K a year, but at least he'll be ok.

Page 4 : What's Straw hiding (continuation of Cover Story)

Didn't read. The headline is enough, as well as past form, for me to make my own mind up.

Page 5 : Barrymore police blunders.

Didn't read. Can't stand the man.

Page 6 : Cabinet ministers revolt against Royal Mail sell off.

Didn't read. I read about it on BBC news web.

Page 7 : Soccer WAG knife raid terror.

Didn't read. Hate football and WAGS.

                Page 8 : 1.3 Trillion debt

                Didn't read. Too depressing.

Page 9. David Walliams on the dance floor.

Wouldn't normally read, but I did scan, because I thought he was homosexual, and wondered what he was doing dancing with a girl. Apparently he's her boyfriend. I stand corrected.

Page 9 : Cancer in a glass of wine

Scanned briefly. We seem to get told that some food will or will not kill us every day now.

                Pae 10 & 11 : Coverage of the Queen Mum's Statue / Fashion Error.

Skipped. Not interested in the Royals.

Page 12 : £ 0.25 million bill for return of prisoner.

Skipped, but annoyed at how much we have spent on this.

Page 13 : Churchgoing lady cuffs a vandal and faces fine.

Mostly skipped, but annoyed at the injustice of the innocent who seem to get locked up more and more for daring to speak out or take action.

Page 14 : Max Hastings and "Yes, torture is wrong, but why do we allow those who hate us to live here ?"

Skipped. I disagree with the 1st point. Torture is acceptable under some circumstances. It's a necessary evil. As for the 2nd point, I do agree with. Couldn't be bothered to read.

Page 15 : Alison Pearson column,

Agreed with most of what she wrote. Didn't read the Slumdog bit, as I'm not interested in the film.

Page 16 : Pensioner squatting in her own £2m home.

Scanned briefly as I was curious to how she could be squatting in her own home. Bit of a non-story.

Page 17 : Terror fights means end of privacy.

Scanned briefly. More power to the government. Oh great.

Page 17 : Council tax to soar 30 times the cost of inflation.

Didn't read, but it has got me wondering what the next round of bills are going to be.

                Page 18 : Proton therapy saves a boy's life.

                Mostly skipped.

Page 19 : Policeman who defended himself dragged in to court.

Skipped. This sort of thing is happening more and more each day.

                Page 20 - 21 : Rat pictures.

                Huh ? WTF ?

Page 21 : Yard accused of Apartheid

Skipped. Another minority figure stirring up trouble. Again.

Page 22 : Stem Cell gamble could help father walk again.

                Skipped. No opinion.

Page 23 : Arson Probe in rachorse death.

                Skipped. Not important to me.

Page 24 : Sorry we can't hunt for burglars. Officers playing poker.

Read in full. Disgusting story. Call themselves police officers ?

                Page 25 - 26 : Polygamy UK.

Skipped, but annoyed regardless. Thousands of men milking the system to pay for multiple wives. Mormons and/or Muslims at a guess.

Page 28 : All black Eastenders.

                Skipped.

Page 29 : Woman who lost weight.

                skipped. Non-story in my view.

Page 30 : Will Labour allow a hardliner in to Britain ?

Skipped. The answer is yes. Too depressing to read.

Page 31 : Mother's frantic battle to save girl in gas blaze.

Scanned briefly. Just confirms my belief that I don't want gas in a house. Statistically speaking, I know, blah blah blah. But someone has to win the lottery, someone has to die in a house explosion, and I want to minimise my chances ok ?

Page 32 : Angler hooked a King Ray.

I hate fishing, so I skipped.

Page 33 : Egg donor about to do it again.

                Skipped. boring.

                Page 34 onwards

                TV guide, puzzles, Sport.

                Skipped.

Nothing really interesting today to be honest. Oh well.
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
