    Could you not just lose a few inches and have a false ceiling?

          Checked the settings on the timer this morning and found that heating on for about 13 hours a day. That'll be it then

            we got -6 outside, been down to -15 three weeks ago, been a long cold winter

            then,

            the outside of the house is clad in 10cms of polystyrene like this...

            so exterior walls are about 55cms thick

            roof has 30cms of glass fibre under the eves, and then another 30 cms between the loft and the upstairs ceiling

            ground level floors have 10 cms of polystyrene between the concrete foundation and the anilhydride underneath the floor boards


            double glazing


            gas bills are about 1k gbp for the whole year, from november to april we run the gas heating 24/7


            water comes from the mains and from the well, using a combination of valves the well water feeds the heating system and the baths showers dishwasher washing machine etc


            conservatory has a solar collector

            living room has a fire place with vents convecting the warm air to other areas

              All the rads (except for the heated towel rad) have TRVs, doesn;t help when they are all on 5 all the time (see the stat quote above for the reason).

                    I'm 6' 2" standing up, but could probably crouch into the bedroom, because obviously most time is spent horizontal.

                    The bath and bog could be treated in the same way, but the shower would have to be a neck down job. Not a real problem, as I'm a slaphead.

                    Perhaps 4" of insulation and half inch plasterboard is the answer after all.

                      No I'm living in a house not a garage.

                      The bricks and cladding look interesting, something for us to bear in mind if we ever can afford to gut the house and extend - need about £1500 extra per month to afford the additional mortgage!
