Why can't we have grit that doesn't need 'activating'

I dumped 1.5kg of table salt on my drive yesterday morning, 10 mins later it was the clearest bit of tarmac for miles.

No activation necessary.

Just doing my bit for the community.

The run-off from our drive also helped de-snow half of the cul-de-sac too
