No, you only have to pay a licence if you use the TV to watch television programmes as they are aired, or television programmes that have been recorded off the air.

If you only use it for other uses, such as games, watching pre-recorded DVDs, etc, then you do not need a licence.

If you don't watch it much, that is #1, you do need a licence. If you don't watch it at all, you can play nice, or not: you can detune the TV so that it cannot receive broadcasting, and let them verify that. Or you can tell them that you don't need a licence (or tell them nothing), and let them take it from there.

My brother watches only DVDs and has no TV licence. I recall he had to disconnect the TV from the wall and detune it. He may even have taken his aerial down. The licensing folks accept that.

Another option is to disguise it by using an Active camouflage kit that bends light around the tv. A bit like Preditor with A.Schwarzenager.
Just remember to unplug it at night or it will suck your brains out through a straw

Do TV detector vans actually exist? I've never seen one (although they're probaby disguised), and I've never known anyone to get caught by them.

I've always thought they're just a scare tactic used by the BBC to get people to pay.

I do have a TV license, but I was under the impression that if you don't have one, you can just tell them you don't have a TV. If they come round, they have no legal right of entry and so can't enter your home unless they have the police with them.

I may be wrong mind....

I genuinely don't get what you are saying, unless it is that it is acceptable not to pay taxes if you get away with it. Personally I do not hold that, and regard those who do as simply criminals.

I've got no problem. I like channels with fewer advert breaks. The fee is chicken feed anyway.
