They dont need to pass anything if they are entitled!
I think it is the case that any person who is entitled can ask and if they ask they are issued. The passport can then be removed, but I am not sure of those circumstances, but probably restrict movement to within the UK.
The character thing is for foreigners applying to become British. If you or your parents or whatever the criteria is you are "entitled" to a British passport.

    Anybody know better?

The UK can hardly take it on itself to save every innocent person throughout the world.

Also he MAY be a risk. If there is doubt the safety of UK citizens must always come above the interests of foreign nationals. If it were up top me, I would be deporting those dangerous Islamic radicals regardless of their possible fate in other countries.

Why not? It's only fair after all! Just like debt relief in Africa...

We seem to be forgetting something in this whole story

            The guy is Australian

Hence he deserves everything he gets. Just thought I'd clarify this for those of you still struggling to come to terms with the complexities of international relations.

Personally, Bekky darling, I would deny the right to a British passport to anyone who was not British by birth, particularly to those from the colonies who have declared their independance or whose ancestors have forgone the right to a British passport by becoming citizens of another nation.

It realy gets to me that so many people from the old empire now want the benefits of being British after their forebears gave up those rights so long ago.
