I quite often get (normally during "small talk" rather that a direct question) - Do you have family? when speaking to clients....

I have never been asked about family in an interview.

I've been asked so many times I've written it on the last page of the CV. Still get asked at interviews. Had an agent call me yesterday, and amongst all the other stuff they asked, they asked about children too.

If I come face to face with anyother human being I always attempt to interact on a human level - so yes its fairly likely that if I would talk to a gas engineer (or anyone else) about things that were not directly related to the specific task at hand which might include but not be restricted to thier/my life and family.

If a Fireman were in the middle of attempting to rescue someone it is unlikely that I would engage in such an "off topic" conversation but in general everyday interactions it is far from uncommon for civilized humans to speak to each other - some might call it politeness. Maybe you should try it - possibly the Gas Engineer might respond by not ripping you off!!

The missus manages 15 women. She reckons thats only half the problem. The other factor is thats its a cast iron safe way of throwing a sickie, and it counts as carers leave, i.e. if you dont take your full allotment you are a fool
