The Lone Gunman: In Denmark the stuff from the Kommune (local council) only comes in Danish, or is that only just...

I relate an amusing story: I had a letter from the Kommune that I found rather baffling, so I had a Dane at work look at it, baffled them so much they gave up trying to read it half way through. Then had one of the translators look at it, they could translate it, but what it meant? Hmm. Then had a Vicar friend look at it, expert in a variety of Latins and Greek also in Danish language going back hundreds of years, they hazzarded a guess but weren't too confident. Finally gave it to my lawyer who proceeded to phone the kommune, got through to the lady that wrote the letter, asked them what it meant, and then told me her reply.

Anyways, a few days later, I was chatting with one of my neighbours, and they had had the same letter. Confused by it, they too had phoned this same letter writing lady from the council.

Turned out she had told them something quite different from what she had told my lawyer.

Ho hum.

It is similar in Germany. I had a similarly amusing experience.
You register with your local authority and then with your district. Local was easy and as the guy wasnt busy he helped. Got the district one, but no help. Tried to translate it but could not so went round to a neighbours, she said it was written in old high Deutsche (think Shakespearean English) and it made little sense to her either. You can pay a translator at the office where you register.
It then turns out that under European law half the questions are illegal, but the German authorities decided to use the old residency forms so as not to have to print new ones.
Daft thing is, Germans being Germans, they will not process the form unless it is properly filled out. And the Germans accuse the UK of not being commited to EU law.
The other amusing thing is the office where you register. We spoke to a very nice student and I asked in passing how many languages he spoke, he looked puzzled so I said well surely you have to have linguistic skills to work here. He laughed and replied in the negative.
How we laughed when I explained that as a stupid foreigner I had assumed that in an office no German will ever visit that the people who worked there would speak many foreign languages, in fact German is the only required language to get a job there.

Same should apply to all the ex pats in Spain (and other European countries) that can't be bothered to learn the language or try to fit in with local culture.

I have not met the resident communities in Spain or any other country for that matter. Most Brits I have met have been migratory, not permanently resident. Those who regard themselves as the later have to a man learned the lingo and joined in the local community.
I dont realy mind the not learning the lingo and the not fitting in bit, that is the look out of the individual.
What I object to is an insistance on changing local law to suit the incomer, or the generation of "no go" areas for locals and police alike. Something I have never witnessed outside the UK.

IMHO the Government should mind its own damn business. As long as they try and force people to integrate there will be problems. The other problem, as far as I see it, is that this country is desperately overcrowded and the indiginous population is resenting the immigrants who are making a difficult situation worse. Bliar and co are constantly trying to emulate the US and their policies on multi-culturalism but in the US there are only about 65 people per square mile - in the UK there are over 500. Head, wall, bang repeatedly together.

We have alot of people but unfortunatley the wrong (old) type.
Most ex white collar workers are unlikely to want to clean toilets in their old age so who is going to do the sh1tty lower paid jobs?
We could use some of the umemployed but we still wouldn't have enough.
The only soulution is to up the TFR (total fertillity rate) until then we will always need immigrants.

When I was 7 we lived in Holland. We had to have Dutch lessons and all our lessons were given in Dutch - although the teacher could speak English and would help me and my sister out.

I was once told off for speaking English to my sister during school time as it was not practicing my Dutch.

Part of the problem is that we have a Govt. that is trying to bend over backwards to accomodate the migrants at the expense of the indiginous communities.
Another part of the problem is the aggresive nature of the migrant population insisting that their prejudices are observed whilst ignoring our own against them.
The "You cnat do that to us" attitude that has come with some of these people is appaling and with ever more bleeding hearts and artists saying "poor loves" it gets ever harder to have an integrated society.

Like I said before if they dont like something, but that something is perfectly legal, then they should shut up or ship out.

In many cases their ghettos and poverty are of their own making.

Why couldn't we use all of the unemployed - they sit on their backsides all day but bring in money - make them do what the rest of us have to do - go out and earn a living! Also consider - more people - more toilet cleaners - less people less toilet cleaners.
