Diesel cars offer better economy but will cost more to buy and service, and the fuel costs more so it won't pay. Plus diesel cars sound like tractors.
In the £1K bracket you're in Bangernomics territory. I'd go for a big-engined old Jag/BMW/Audi with full leathers, and sell at first sign of trouble. Check out the prices of the old 2.8L A6
