To the OP, I strongly recommend The Wire for another excellent HBO series.

Now you mention it I watched the 1st 3 episodes (series 1) & didn't like it. I did like "The Shield". Does it (The Wire) get better in later seasons?Originally posted by Platypus View PostTo the OP, I strongly recommend The Wire for another excellent HBO series.Bored.Comment

maybe some bits I confused with Tudors, another yawn festOriginally posted by Incognito View PostI don't know what you've been watching, but that certainly isn't Rome.
Titus Pullo - British ex Slave, now common soldier, marries the slave girl yes, but he's quite happy whoring it and also sires Cleopatras son.
Lucius Vorenus - Doesn't cheat on his wife, just ends up killing her.
Then you're forgetting the characters of Caesar, Mark Antony, Octavian, Brutus, etc, etc, etc.
Which one was the token gay? Cicero? My missus didn't think he was too hot, maybe you're into 60 year old men.
Don't try to take it too seriously and it's actually a really good series.
still, i stand by my original remarksCoffee's for closersComment

Sounds more like the Tudors, which got quite good toward the end of the seriesThe court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.
But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”Comment

Season 1 the first few episodes are very hard going, and boy is it slow, but trust me it's a rollercoaster ride and you'll soon be buying the boxsets!
It just gets better and better from Season 2.Comment

I'd recommend 'Flight of the Conchords,' I don't think it's out here in the UK yet, but I watched the first series and it's absolutly cracking, top top humour. It's the first time I've laughed out loud in a long time. Favourite episode = 'The Actor'

Deadwood was far, far, far, far better!
I recall that Deadwood was originally going to be set in Rome but because HBO and the BBC were also discussing a collaboration that was to be set in Rome, Rome became Rome and Deadwood became Deadwood.Comment

WHS.Originally posted by Bagpuss View PostVery much enjoyed it when it was on. Kevin McKidd and Ray Stevenson are great actors and deserve to be bigger
I'm baffled how anyone couldn't enjoy Rome I and II - The history was all there, in compelling and accurate form, and the raunchy personal interest was amply provided too (and makes "I, Claudius" for all its merits seem like Muffin the Mule!). Also the dialog was crisp and spot on, and the plot lines outstanding IMHO.
I think some people, maybe lacking classical education at school, can't identify with a drama set in classical Rome, with the characters' motivations and conventions so alien to ours in many ways, any more than maybe I'd warm to a series set in ancient India or Mongolia. Not a criticism in any way, but just the way things are.Last edited by OwlHoot; 4 December 2008, 21:00.Work in the public sector? Read the IR35 FAQ hereComment
