I'm baffled how anyone couldn't enjoy Rome I and II - The history was all there, in compelling and accurate form, and the raunchy personal interest was amply provided too (and makes "I, Claudius" for all its merits seem like Muffin the Mule!). Also the dialog was crisp and spot on, and the plot lines outstanding IMHO.
I think some people, maybe lacking classical education at school, can't identify with a drama set in classical Rome, with the characters' motivations and conventions so alien to ours in many ways, any more than maybe I'd warm to a series set in ancient India or Mongolia. Not a criticism in any way, but just the way things are.
