Good points - this about what's in it for you in the longer term (you clearly have considered this)

For all those who say "no" this is called business development, you could learn something from SA here.

You tell this to every man?
I've seen much of the rest of the world. It is brutal and cruel and dark, Rome is the light.

Bet you'll be a permie within a year.

The trick is to do it, and learn it and still charge the client the full wack. That's what I do. I'd rather eat dirt than give a freebee to a client. Let's face it, if you hired a plumber and he has to use a new tool or technique would he do it for free.

People running a real business often work very long hours for no money to get the company successful. Thieving from your client to advance your business is unprofessional.

And yes, if a plumber needs to learn a new thing he will pay to go on a course to keep his skills up. If he breaks a tool he will buy a new one.

I've been fortunate in being able to train up during paid working hours. Really never needed to do any out of hours learning or have a technical set up at home. That said, I've been very focused on what contracts to go for, not taking renewals in order to move on and never been a comfort zone man. i've chanced my arm a few times by taking on contracts without knowing the skills. Had a couple of sticky moments, but it paid off big time for me.
