I always thought that 'Dune' was based upon the story of Mohammed, so the similarity is not a coincidence

place names
nomadic desert people
religion
source of substance nesseccary for travel (Spice = Oil)
Interfering foreign powers (house atredies, house harkonnen, house corrino)
