why dont you just use a number scale?
1 to 10 for helpfulness
1 being utter crud
10 being the font of all helpfulness

how about this approach

'rate the helpfulness on a scale of 1 - 10 where 1 = not very helpful at all and 10 = very helpful'


then you dont have to worry about the words

they do 1-4 but next to the numbers they want a label so that users know which is best or worst
