I know how it is supposed to work, but when lane 3 is completely empty and its 7pm on a Thursday night, that traffic you are talking about catching has already got home, had its tea and is watching the telly. I'm all for traffic management if there is traffic to manage. I've been on the M42 when there has been little or no traffic yet the signs are on limiting the speed. To me it's more like they are on a timer than being actively managed.

Prehaps the lads and lasses and the control centre get bored and do it for fun I can just see them sticking the 50 limit on the signs and seeing who does/doesn't slow down.

I do always try to stick to the limits, however I still do not know of anyone who has received a speeding fine on this part of the M42.

It's usually an indication of how fast a car is overall. Not many are blisteringly fast to 60, then no poke to a ton and beyond. Unless it's a Caterham go-kart perhaps.

Have you ever driven a performance car?

By performance I mean anything with more than let's say 300BHP?

I own 3 cars, each has a 4.2 litre engine, two are supercharged, two weigh ~2 metric tons.

2 will reach 62 MPH in ~7 seconds and go on to ~140MPH

1 will reach 62mph in ~4 seconds and go on to ~170MPH

When you own cars such as these and learn how to drive and exploit their performance effectively then they prove themselves far better than you sat there with your top-trumps will appreciate.
