    completely unreliable

A friend of mine recently experimented with using GeoIP to target UK users with some specific content. One chap who works down in Milton Keynes didn't see it as his company's European web traffic is all routed through a NOC in Spain. So in that case posters who aren't even in the same country, let alone the same office, would potentially appear to be the same person.

Then there was the time Slashdot banned the IP address of somebody who'd tried to hack them. Unfortunately it was actually the IP of an NTL proxy serving a large part of the Midlands. (NTL, or Virgin or whoever they are this week, don't run their network that way any more though.)

I seldom have the same external IP address two days in a row.

You'd have to be extremely sad, if not borderline certifiable to do that on a regular basis.

You've come right out the other side of the forest of irony and ended up in the desert of wrong.

Anyone who can be bothered to muck around with sockpuppets can certainly mung a few different IP addresses so it really wouldn't find any but the most average sockpuppets.

          A bit pointless really.

If that ever happens and I have to choose then I'd probably stick to my sasguru character. Hmmm, maybe one of the fembots.

              What's the point?

Are you so lacking in character that you have to hide behind a mirage of made up personalities?

You'd better edit this out before Spartacus shows up for the night.

You'll have to ask Paula. Or Nina. Or Betty. Or Lola.

If, as has been pointed out, you can use proxy servers or mess about with IP's, is there any other way then of ensuring each user has 1 account and 1 account only on CUK ?

I cannot think of any 100% foolproof ways (apart from visiting the CUK office in person, giving a DNA sample, and then having an account created for you using an algorithm that is construed from the DNA sample.)

However, you can make it not worthwhile for people to create multiple ID's. Eg, levy a charge for account creation or something ?
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
