Steve Lukather is also noteworthy - as well as Toto and his solo stuff, he's renowned as a prolific session guitarist.
Where are we going? And what’s with this hand basket?

Not the best ever but growing up listening to punk I was always mightily impressed with John McGeoch.

Personally I think he peaked with PIL, dead at 49 though.

                Townshend??

I know only rated as 50th best by Rolling Stone but I think he's good.

Personally I think Jimmy Page is probably the best there is.

I agree that Lindsay Buckingham is much underated.
good to see tommy bolin being mentioned - he had amazing skills. i put him in the "what a shocking waste of great talent" bucket along with mike bloomfield. clapton is the only "god" - just listen to the bluesbreakers album - now that is tone!

amongst the names not mentioned so far - don't forget charlie's byrd and christian, herb ellis, dwayne allman, carlos santana, barney kessell, pat metheny, john mclaughlin, alex lifeson, george harrison, stephen stills, chuck berry, steve hackett, les paul, richard thompson, randy california or the sundry kings... buckingham is fine but give me the original peter green anytime.

The Edge? You are havin a larf!!!! See Bill Bailey playing "in the style of".

                      What about Randy Rhodes?
                      Midge Ure?
                      Frank Zappa?
                      BB King?

                      Slim from The Hamsters.

A number of players in local pub bands would put many of the pros to shame.

There are so many that have been missed.
