The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”

You want to keep expenses down!

How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

Anything less that £160 a night is slumming it

£25 seems a bit steep considering you will be asleep for most of the time. Unless you stay awake in the room all night. What a rip off.

After dealings with the Indian "business" community in Glasgow as a student tenant I made a vow only to rent from white middle class landlords forever after.

A vast sweeping generalisation I know, but my prejudices were confirmed by an Indian woman who tried to rent us her son's student house for a New Year stay. Let's just say our notions of cleanliness were vastly different to hers.

We left the next morning straight into a hotel five times more expensive.

Me and the missus just got back from 4 weeks in the outback. We headed off into the sunset without booking ahead and we always said that if we couldnt get in anywhere we would sleep in the car.
Well we had to, one night up in Port Hedland, on the edge of the great Sandy desert. All the hotels were full because of a miners convention. We had two choices, leave the windows open and get eaten alive, close the windows and suffocate.
The fact that I had been living on beans and tins of tuna for a week didnt help.

Then in Newman , the only room we could get was a backpacker room at £25.
communal bogs and showers. I had to stand guard on the door while the missus had a wee, then a sneaky shower at 4:30 am.

We had three nights in a penthouse suite in Perth though at £75, to make up for it
