Unemployment surged last month, with the number of Britons claiming jobless benefits rising by 31,800. This is the eighth monthly rise in the claimant count, although it was slightly less than analysts had forecast.
But the alternative ILO measure of unemployment recorded its biggest rise in 17 years, jumping by 164,000 to 1.79 million in the three months to August.
The total number of people in employment slumped by 122,000 in the three weeks to August, the largest drop since early 1993.
One economist called the figures "grim."
Alan Clarke at BNP Paribas, said: "Employment is falling off a cliff and it is still early days in this slowdown."
