Trolling aside, for the sake of historical accuracy, the Romans conquered all of Scotland, but found the mountains of the north too hard to keep a hold of due to guerilla tactics (cf Afghanistan) so drew back and consolidated the edge of their control at Hadrians Wall, and later the Antonine Wall, which runs north of Glasgow. In later years it was used more as a way to control trading and taxes than as protection.

Now it just gets used as a backdrop for inaccurate Kevin Costner movies.
I don't wish to take anything away from the Scots' historic bravery, etc., but I think the weather was the deciding factor.

You've come right out the other side of the forest of irony and ended up in the desert of wrong.

Although I think the weather is moving south. When I decanted from Scotland to south England in 93, the weather down here was dry... Suffolk used to claim to be drier than the northern Sahara. Now we had a wet summer that reminds me of the ones back home. Time to move to France?

NO, go back to Scotland and take your bloody weather with you! ;-)
I am not qualified to give the above advice!

Well I am. Got it all planned for retirement. Lovely! Limousin for me and Mrs. D. Akin to England in the 30s, but with a distinct whiff of garlic and the occasional chicken running about... still, with a fantastic 3-bedroom medieval house with a river view for £70,000 all in, can't be bad.

I would but Alex Salmond doesn't want me back, I'm a traitor.

Not really because I then did a post grad in aberdeen and the minute I went down south for my first contract they buggered off to Ireland - taking all my stuff with them too.
Rule Number 1 - Assuming that you have a valid contract in place always try to get your poo onto your timesheet, provided that the timesheet is valid for your current contract and covers the period of time that you are billing for.

                      I preferred version 1!
