I'd heard of XL but not the other two. To be honest the charter airline business (I understand XL's main business) was always going to be under threat from the Ryanairs and Easyjets chipping away at their user base. I'm fairly sure that both Ryanair and Easyjet will still be here end of next year (a long recession of 6 years would be a different matter). End of the day flights are still dead cheap compared with 20 years ago (even if they doubled in price!) and when you see what a dire summer we've had, there will still be plenty of folk willing to jet off for a few days. What's the alternative - pay 70 pounds a night for a UK B&B where you still have to navigate a dingy corridor to get to the bathroom?
Speaking gibberish on internet talkboards since last Michaelmas. Plus here on Twitter
I didn’t know about not being protected from being stranded if you book through an airlines website. I do this all the time with BA as part of their executive scheme. OK, they are probably unlikely to go bust, but I am going to have to think about my travel plans in the future.
How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

Just pay by credit card. If the airline goes bust and you have paid over 100 quid you are entitled to a refund by the credit card company. I pay for all of my major purchases by this method for this reason and I am just amazed that people pay 1,000s by cheque with the risk that involves. It's jusr sheer ignorance, and costly ignorance !!
