Ahem... ... Photons travel at light-speed, not protons.

Anyway this thing has the acceleration of a London Bus:

It planned to circulate the first beams 10th September 2008. First collisions at high energy are expected about a month later with the first results from the experiments soon after.
    Bored.

I understand the real interesting experiments start in December.
I can just imagine a couple of techies sitting there today itching to "have a go" though.
I am not qualified to give the above advice!

Probably it'll get up to 99.999% in about 10min, then take ages to get the extra .00099999999999999.

Given the somewhat hysterical reporting by some of the more sensationalist newspapers, it'll be little wonder if there are a spate of suicides across the planet from assorted troubled souls who get spooked at the slighest provocation today.

So, no running up behind them with an air-filled crisp packet ok ?
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

I've just been watching it live on BBC News. They didn't even manage a countdown, just a "we think it's running now".

But they said it's going to be switched on in stages, and it won't be a for a couple of hours until the beam is going round the full circle. So we've all got a bit of time left.
Will work inside IR35. Or for food.

They had a countdown on Sky, then all we saw was a very quick blimp on a screen and everyone went wild!!!!!

So what is the best technique? Sneak up slowly and give them a shove at the same time?
