Which in itself is a prime example of woolly thinking given there manifestly are people who feel religion is genuinely important who are mature and very well educated. Which doesn't make them right of course, but have you ever had a chat with a Rabbi?

Perhaps you mean "In people like me who feel that religion is often only genuinely important to immature, poorly educated woolly thinkers.". It's certainly the case that in the US, many of the prominent Christian leaders are pretty ignorant.
