This is now automatic, for anyone not paying in. They started doing it only last year. If you've already filled one out and they didn't question your Selbständigigkeit then you're in the clear. If you do get one, then expect them to send you a further questionaire about whether you have more than one Auftraggeber and do you have any employees, and if you can't say yes.....be afraid.
It looks like I'm okay. At the start of the year the Finanzamt tried to get me to pay Gewerbesteuer but after some to and fro'ing I stayed as Freiberufler and I do have more than one Auftraggeber (although this year its looking not so good that way!) Also, I registered as Freiberufler sometime ago (10 years or so) and that also counts. For quite a bit of information you can look here:

Hopefully you don't get caught as it can cost up to €24,000!!!
Brexit is having a wee in the middle of the room at a house party because nobody is talking to you, and then complaining about the smell.

In that case yes but there are quite a few others on this thread!!!

Cheers for that one though, as I said I'm ashamed of my total lack of foreign language ability.

            'Tis merely agglutination.

            agglutinate |əˈgloōtnˌāt|

            verb

firmly stick or be stuck together to form a mass : [as adj. ] ( agglutinated) rhinoceros horns are agglutinated masses of hair.

            • Biology (with reference to bacteria or red blood cells) clump together [ trans. ] : these strains agglutinate human red cells [ intrans. ] | cell fragments agglutinate and form intricate meshes.

            • [ trans. ] Linguistics combine (simple words or parts of words) without change of form to express compound ideas.

            DERIVATIVES
            agglutination |əˌgloōtnˈā sh ən| noun

ORIGIN mid 16th cent.: from Latin agglutinat- ‘caused to adhere,’ from the verb agglutinare, from ad- ‘to’ + glutinare (from gluten ‘glue’ ).
