Not at all... you can solder many* SMDs with a soldering iron.

Whether they work afterwards is largely down to the skill of the operator.

*Fairly obviously you need a different, rather more sophisicated, method for ball grid arrays, and even PLCCs are a bit of a pain.

Robot pick and place with solder wave everytime for me.
