Agreed, although in practice this often results in dissatisfaction amongst the other staff, cleaners, chefs, maitre D etc etc that are unable to earn tips. -

These other folk do have a choice on whether to become a waiter or waitress themselves if they feel hard done by, the same as permies can become contractors.

How can tips possibly be regarded as part of a wage (particularly in a non/low tipping society). I can see the bank managers face when asking for a loan.
Do these people pay tax on their tips?I am not qualified to give the above advice!

Not being funny here but everyone gets a chance to consider the offer on the table before they sign a contract of employment. It's one of 20 million companies you can go and work for, my advice is they should consider other options. The cycle of life: born > learn > work > learn > dead.Comment

Whether you agree with it or not, the minimum wage is supposed to guarantee a certain level of pay and there is no obligation on the customer to tip.
I think this 'assumption' that wages will be made up directly by customers is disgusting.
PS - when I tip, I make sure it is in cash and goes to the person who gave me good service. Never tip via credit/debit card as it is likely to be pocketed by the restaurant.+50 Xeno Geek Points
