I work in Cheltenham, it’s full of 'wannabe toffs' with maxed out mortgages and credit cards... I love the credit crunch.

I guess Bath and Oxford are the same?
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

        Bath is my recommendation.

Manchester - only for the reason that you wont bump into any Manure United fans

St Albans is lovely, and close to London.

Bristol / Bath very nice but if you've got young kids you have to consider the accent you could leave them with. It's a bit like the Brummie accent whereby it just makes anyone sound like a village idiot.

There are some decent parts of Surrey and Sussex that have good connections to London so you can go in if you need to. They are also handy for airports/channel tunnel etc.

Another vote for the Dorset coast, Bournemouth, Poole etc. It really is fantastic to finish your day on the beach!

Obviously, as a contactor, the only place to buy a house is Sandbanks!

Plenty of front end web/media work in the Leeds/Manchester area - the problem being that the majority of media companies consider £200/day or a 30k salary to be reasonable. There's better money with the big companies but lots of competition for the work.

If you're well established in London, my advice would be to stay put as you're gonna find things pretty disappointing elsewhere (work-wise at least).
