what do your co-workers think of the situation? if they are non-comital i would guess you have been getting on his (and everyone else's nerves) if they support you - get back in there and stand your ground but be careful - don't give them cause to terminate.

I think this is the best advice. I mean, are you sure you weren't being just a bit irritating? We all makes mistakes and maybe you just missed the cues.

Like your thinking - but the revenue had a good go at bankrupting him anyway. He lives in a little world which is somewhat detached from the rest of us anyway.

IE: Spent 5 days at work ringing round various breakers yards to get a radiator cap for his 12 year old car, because he didn't want to pay Vauxhall £10 for it!! Tart.

Well, personally my sympathy is with him for having to work with a twat like you who's got his head stuffed so far up his own arse.

Ok, sensible suggestions only please.

I have just been subjected to a barage of abuse from another contractor in the office, for no apparent reason, other than I appear to have been getting on his nerves for a couple of weeks (apparently, first I knew!).

He is trying to concentrate this morning, because the project he is working on is not going well, and he is under pressure. I have had a conversation across the office on 2 occasions and other than that I have been listening to some CDs I downloaded last night.

I have now moved out of the office into another one, because I feel so belittled by what he has just done. I emailed him, explained that I felt it was unfair, unprovoked, and unprofessional. He basically told me to go forth and multiply.

I have emailed ClientCo manager and agency (who he is also with) to raise a grievance; but really don't want to work somewhere where that is tolerated.

Anyone any thoughts?

Avoid him, don't speak to him first, don't react when he says anything nasty -If he's pleasant, keep it short and move on. He will never be your friend os just accept it.
If anyone asks how you get on with him, say "No problem, I can deal with anyone".

Chances are he is a hard worker, valued by the client and his "attitude" is accepted by the client in return.

Its a fact of life that there is always someone to hate, someone who is just a complete tosser. On the other hand, you got to recognise that YOU are that tosser to someone else.
Personally I like to walk softly but carry a big stick. (except on cuk )

I'm going to go against the grain here and ask 2 questions:

1) Why did you talk across the office? Common courtesy would say you would go over and speak to whoever without causing disruption.
2) Why are you listening to music CDs in the office. Is that what you are paid to do?

There's nothing more irritating when under pressure than thoughtless or perceived lazy co-workers.
You're talking and behaving like an permie not like someone who runs a small business.
I would apologise and offer to help out, like some others have suggested.

1). Its an open plan office, everyone talks across it to some extent. In fact, the gentleman concerned is one of the worst offenders - he very often reads out loud from the "VIZ Profanosaurus," which is rude, and to be honest irritates the hell out of me when I am working - but I let it ride.

2). When I am concentrating I often listen to music, as do several others here, and most other places I have worked. Have you seen the "what you listening to" thread.

I am behaving, to some extent like a permie. This is because, I suppose, to a large extent the job is like a permie. I've been here for 18 months, he's been here 4 years.

I won't be offering to help him out, because I have enough of my own work on, although I admit this would really take the wind out of his sails if I did.

I shall apologise to him for "annoying" him, because it was unintentional - had he had a quiet word then I would have tried to accomodate him.

That said, I want at least a public apology for the way he spoke to me. I then want readings from "the good book" canned, and his toaster binned (as it stinks the office out and isn't PAT tested).

Oooh, I'm just getting angrier. Thats not right.

SAS: Thanks for that. I don't think anybody has met me would call me weak, incompetent or lazy.... but I appreciate it is hard to judge someone solely on the basis of posts on a message board!!

Just testing. You didn't take umbrage which is a good sign.
Seriously though, when I was a contractor it was wear a suit always, head down, focus on the goal, smile at everybody, don't say much (well for the most part anyway...). I behaved like a professional businessman and was treated as such.
