“Your employment status is not a matter of choice,” HMRC emboldened in the new fact-sheet ES/FS1, entitled ‘Employed or self-employed for tax and National Insurance contributions.’

Really straightforward, serious question: why not?

Why do I not get to choose my employment status, and accept all that goes with my choice?

Because someone voted Labour.

Therefore, your employment status for tax purposes is decided by which status gives the government the most tax, and for all other purposes the status that gives you least protection and rights.
