Actually if you go on an organised tour you are quite correct. Excellent food, beer and entertainment to be had.

I was there recently. Dodgy as. Felt uncomfortable in the downtown. The place I stayed at in Kensington suffered an armed robbery 10 days prior to my visit and all the guests valuables were taken from the security box. Nigerians they said.

Cape Town now has a higher murder rate than Jozi.

      The Apartheid Museum is outstanding.
A trip to Soweto is doable.
Many affluent folk tend to stay in secure shopping centres.

You have to read the local papers. At once hilarious and terrifying.

Always a minimum of 15 different types of meat - and a minimum of 5 game meats.

Choice of meat includes - crocodile, zebra, giraffe, impala, ostrich, etc.

Aviyal (Herbivore) - Spicy mixed vegetables cooked in a coconut sauce and served with rice

Vegetable Lasagne (Herbivore) - Chopped vegetables served between layers of pasta and covered in cheese.

Kumbi Baji (Herbivore) - Mushrooms and peas cooked in a spiced yogurt and cream sauce, served with rice

I'll second Carnivore, but if you can't make it there and like meat, The Butcher's Block restaurant is always excellent (IIRC there is one in Sandton Square attached to the shopping centre)..

JHB has always felt dodgy for me, always wary .... never felt uneasy in CPT however. I know ppl say it has a higher murder rate than Joburg but thats media. I go to CPT twice a year and stay with friends who dont live in especially affluent areas but their cars are never locked and neither is the house.

          Try that in Joburg!

I'd rather not. My mate's wife is from Joburg - her family moved to Cape Town after they were broken into by guys with big guns. Fortunately they had some sort of panic room in their bedroom so they were unharmed. House was trashed though.

Hillbrow is an ideal location for an evening stroll, to take in the sights and meet new people.

Be sure to take a good camera and wear your Sunday best. In fact, as so much of the indigenous culture revolves around status and wealth, carry as much 'bling' and as many gadgets as you can. Show them off to people, and you will command more respect.*

              * Do not follow this advice.
