Oh, just read the rest of it - he's talking about the USA where they have a totally different legal system in any case.

The likelihood of IT becoming a ‘profession’ is nil. For a start the other professions would not have it as it would dilute their power. In deed it would threaten them for dominance of society: the IT bods would know where all the bodies were buried and by whom

If IT had qualification to be obtained before they could ‘practice’ i.e. exclude others, it would drive up prices and make alternative (cheaper) supplies of IT services from the third world no long available.

‘Professional’ status for IT – not going to happen is it.
How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

The best (probably older) programmers think of themselves as craftsmen (like a carpenter) rather than a standard white-collar professional.

Yes, that is the most appropriate social status. Nothing wrong with that either. Although, they are more like a ‘Scribe’ in cultures like the ancient Egyptians.

Dunno about being a profession, but IT isn't a career. Not in the the UK anyway. And you can't compare being a Doctor with a programmer, the rules of biology don't change constantly in medicine. A doctor is like an engineer, but an IT guy is like a God.

I tend to think of us as like the oldest profession. We both have pimps.

Well I will be in a safer place - safely inside prison while the murderers are outside.
