Though I am not sure if atw's lunch is really a global issue - national maybe.

I am organising a whip round for BP, all contributions will go towards the provision of polyester ties, Clarks commando shoes (with a compass in the heel) - waterproof version and a nice pair of driving gloves

Surely a flat rate of cuts is not "fair". Those on larger rates should face bigger (%) cuts, otherwise the number of contractors in poverty is going to increase disproportionately.

I also need enough to pay for patches for my knees with all the crawling I have to do.

It seems to me that this is a typically stupid and unimaginative way to try and increase/maintain profitability. Surely anyone who's good enough to get a gig elsewhere will up sticks (although they may pick their moment) and ML will be left with the dross no-one wants - isn't it a bit like football clubs running out of cash from wealthy crooks, er I mean business backers?

Yes, but that is tomorrow's problem, not today's.

In my experience, managers these days tend not to be that forward-looking.
