ID: The Quest for Identity in the 21st Century

The Author of this book, Susan Greenfield, was on Start the Week (radio4) this morning.

Very interesting discussion about individualism, what it means to be human and intelligence with respect to creative thinking rather than logical thinking.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

    C.S. Lewis

Under the current political regime the quest for the individual is for no identity.
How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the proliferation of tattoo parlours etc, some sort of rebellion or backlash

I caught some of that and you're right, it was very interesting; especially when discussing the ability to grow brain cells on silicon circuit boards

That always makes me smile - I can't recall who said it but there's a famous quote along the line that "it's funny how youth always rebel in a uniform way" The really radical statement amongst youngsters and chavs these days must be not having tats and piercings.

Indeed, or perhaps more accurately, the only ID we will be allowed is the one taken from us by force ("biometrics") and licensed back to us at our own expense (ID cards).

                  Quite insightful.
