I was looking at screens in Curry's at the weekend. Some did look poor, but I saw a couple that were very impressive. The best are 1080P HDTV with HDMI, and I was particularly impressed with a Samsung 40 inch at approx 1100 quid.

Much too expensive!

Visit avforums.com for a list of much cheaper retailers. I got a 40" Sony D3000 LCD for £750 with a 5 year warranty about 6 months ago. The Samsung equivalent was a similar price but I didn't like the glossy finish.

... but is that a 1080p with HDMI ? The Samsung also had a contrast of 1 :50,000 which was the best in the store. Sometimes it's just worth paying a bit more.

All HD TV's are HDMI. I was under the impression that you couldn't have one without the other.

Mine is 720p but there's a well held opinion that with screens sized 40" and under, 1080p isn't that important and you'd be hard pushed to notice the difference unless you were quite close. With the bigger screens it's much more important.

Check the reviews in the What TV & Home Chinema type mags and you'll see what I mean.

The best TV I have ever had is my Sony WEGA 32" - much better than any LCD and far brainer and it could compress its resolution lines when doing widescreen which made HD output look fab. Luckily at the time I had a DVD player with component outputs to fully use it. The only major problem it had was that it weighed 98KG and required movers if I wanted to shift it from one room to the next...so once put down, it was down. Plasmas don't have that problem..you and friend/neighbour can easily shift it.

With so much space in the Passat it is a shame not to use it. How about: crt in the boot of the Passat; when you want to watch a film, open up the boot, reverse up to your lounge window and hey presto - mobile cinema and space saving in the house. Useful for those capming trips I'm sure you must take in it too

HD on a flat screen is great and is not possible on a CRT. So if you want to wait until the prices come down and HD gets rolled out more then fair enough. Personally I like my HD TV - it's like when you first put glasses on as things suddenly become sharper.

Also a lot of people make the mistake of buying a TV which is actually too big for their room. So if you are sat right up against even the best 50 inch screen in a tiny lounge it will look rubbish. But since these are designed for big rooms, sitting further back makes the image appear much better.

Also you are not comparing like with like. We had a 32 inch crt screen and the picture was good, but the LCD one we have now is a 42inch one - I don't even know if you could buy a 42 inch CRT telly and if you could what percentage the depth of the telly would take up.

Milan, get yourself a large plasma showing a looped DVD of a fireplace... the heat produced from the plasma means the real fireplace is superfluous to your needs.

was in the local electrical shop last night, comparing the flat screen tv's, plasma lcd etc and crt

crt's are less than a third of the price of equivalent size lcd's and plasma, and no matter how big or how expensive I can't see any plasma's or lcd's which have a clearer sharper picture than the crt's

why do people spend so much hard earned on this immature technology lcd's and plasmas and put up with such crap pictures ?
