Plug in a USB pen drive onto clients network and copy over their entire source code tree not realising this is being monitored

How is this monitored? Some manner of port sniffing?
We don't have to save the world. The world is big enough to look after itself. What we have to be concerned about is whether or not the world we live in will be capable of sustaining us in it.

No idea. I got a call from some bod the next morning asking why I had been copying several hundred .java files onto a USB drive. It had flagged up on some log file somewhere apparently. I made up some excuse about needing a copy of the code for doing overnight support from home.

Easy, if the code is stored in a properly controlled vault they can see all the access and transactions on the code in real time. Copying source code from the vault to another location rather than checking it out for editing and checking it back in will ring alarm bells.

I just tried that out and it was harmless. The wavy red spelling line appeared, and the little paperclip man made some imaginitive suggestions, but nothing worse than that.

Leaving personal trading statements on your desk while you go coffee/jimmy for a manager with Peter Principle syndrome to read.
How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.
