I interpreted it as just a bit of friendly advice from a traveller who knows what they are talking about.
It was a put down, pure and simple.
Snaw's attitude may be different to mine, but who is to say his is any more valid than mine (which is what he implied by his comment).
If you've lived in a place for 4 years you're bound to know the place inside out - all the nooks and crannies etc, it doesn't mean the opinion of somebody else who spent a weekend in the trashy lights any less valid just because it's from a different viewpoint.
If you want to experience 100% American commercialism and all it has to offer - stay at Times Square. If you don't, don't.
And Snaw, if you'd read my comment fully you'd have noticed that I didn't really recommend the hotel anyway.
"See, you think I give a tulip. Wrong. In fact, while you talk, I'm thinking; How can I give less of a tulip? That's why I look interested."

We can all give advice on anything. What makes one more qualified than others? The fact that someone who has done backpacking tours all over the world may not give the best hotel recommendation on 5-star accommodation is neither here nor there. My 'advice' is to anyone that asks a qn to take everything that is said here with a pinch of salt and to anyone giving such advice not to insist that his/hers is better than anyone else's.
I stayed at the Hotel Metro about 8 years ago, near 5th Avenue and about 35th Street. Come out and turn left and you are at the Empire State, turn right and it is Macy's. Pretty decent hotel and reasonabily central location. Booked it via Virgin as part of a package deal so you may get some initial details from their site.

Wasn't meant as a put down an apologies if it came across that way, just the instinctive reaction of anyone who's lived in NYC towards times square (Or staying in a hotel around there) - don't know anyone who has lived there who doesn't dislike it.
It's minging; it is overpriced, it is overcrowded, it is surrounded by average restaurants that overcharge and rip off tourists and tacky shops. It is a must for anyone to visit on their first trip to NYC cause it's iconic but not as a base to live in.
Not sure what other way I could put that, that wouldn't come across as a put down. But without trying to offend you I think it's about as bad a suggestion as someone could put for a place to be based in NYC. If that's pompous then fine, I'm pompous.
Hang on - there is actually a place called Cheddar?? - cailin maith
