    The second gig once I'd gone independent was a beauty. It was bug fixing a large system, and once I proved I could do that, they simply kept on bashing out the purchase orders for 20, 30 or 60 days at a time, some of them running concurrently. That not only meant I could juggle them for invoicing/cash flow purposes, but I could fill wet weekends with work and take time off when the weather was good.

    The drawback was that I was stuck with the same technology all along, but it gave me the bank balance to survive the early 90s.
