    Is that all?

100 a day equates to 25k per year more or less. Approximately 0.1% of the working population. As aTw points out it excludes in country transfers. Statistically insignificant in a flexible labour market.

Compare it to the amount of people permanently leaving the UK which is rather more than 25k.

If you are trying to stir up a fresh spot of jingoism you could at least try and find a figure that justifies the "shock horror" type approach.

Of course the increasing size of the labour pool versus those authorised to be in it might be more relevant.

If you have a willing employer you can nearly always present the person in a light that, according to home office criteria they will be issued a work permit.

The emplyer has to advertise but the dont have to emply any of applicants and once the required time running the advertisment is over, they can justify that they cannot find a suitable applicant in the EU labour pool.

I would be interested in how many where actually realted to IT skills.
Man, some of the misinformation on this website cracks me up. For one thing, you have to demonstrate that its is a position for which you require a degree or experience equivilant to a degree. How does a degree relate to waitressing?

Also, you have to detail (with evidence) why you didnt employ each and every suitable applicant from the EU labour pool. You cant just say I interviewed 10 people and didnt like them.

These are NEW issues, not the number of permits in force. This is roughly 100 new permits issued each and every working day.
To be really meaningful it would be interested to find have a break down by industry AND a break down of permits issued per country.

Because, personally, the types of people you actually want in this country would come from New Zealand (of course ), Australia and South Africa. These countries have very similar societies to Englands and people from these countries have proven time and time again to have the ability to assimilate with poms (or should that be "to be able to stand poms for any length of time without having to resort to detonating on a bus or in a train).

The types of people you dont want are those from countries who's social and religious make up are at polar opposites to England, ie. anywhere in the middle east or Asia.

I mean, if any Australian DARED to detonate himself on a train there is no farken way in HELL that other Australians in England would call for the government to stop the police doing their job! No, what would happen is the buggers surviving family would probably get bitch slapped by someones jandel and told to move to PNG!

And thus ends Mailmans thoughtful rant for the day

It would also be interesting to know how many work permits expire each month.

Looking at May - 49 and January - 227, I suspect more work permits in May expired than were issued.

The most worrying thing about the numbers is the fact they're going down so much.

Does that mean we're in for a recession

I think the Home Office deserve a couple of for managing to issue that many per day. Didn't think anyone actually worked there, thought they just scanned applications looking for sexy Brazilian girls to pester for sex in return for visas....

Actually this is exactly what goes does on. When the PCG (bless 'em) tried to get some action from the Home Office over blatent visa abuse, such as the ICT option, there was a lot of foot dragging and excuses (did you know that as a contractor you CAN be replaced by a cheaper overseas worker - legally?) but AFAIK no procecutions.

LONDON (Reuters) - The government is to create a dedicated police-led task force to combat the sex-trafficking of women, the UK Human Trafficking Centre.

The announcement came at the conclusion of a four-month long police operation that resulted in the rescue of more than 80 women, some as young as 14, believed to have been trafficked mainly from Eastern Europe, Africa and the Far East.

Home Office minister Vernon Coaker announced the task force at a news conference where the results of Operation Pentameter were unveiled by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO).
"These women were conned and deceived into believing a better life was awaiting them in the UK," said South Yorkshire's Deputy Chief Constable Grahame Maxwell, who led the operation.

Thinking about this some more & it all becomes clearer... Blair made a pledge that he would 'solve' the number of Asylum seekers problem...easy way is to issue work permits for all & sundry even the unskilled... problem solved
