      Cheers!

      Thanks for the replies....

Although some were a little pessimistic.

Surely it's possible to increase the rate, no matter what the (latest) economic crisis is.

Supply and demand still reigns and if I've got the skills in demand and am prepared to be very flexible on location and start date - it could work.

Also, I've contacted a marketing consultant about the possibility of her cold calling and getting me in front of IT Directors / Managers etc and cutting out the agencies.

Also perhaps a move to London might improve the rate by 15 - 20%.

      Thanks again....

Which would probably increase your expenses by about 50%.

        Oh well.

Set up a proper consultancy, charge yourself out at "senior consultant" rates. I've just fired 3 guys who were charging £1250/day and were, frankly, complete muppets. (Apologies to Beaker )

I'm available, and quite senior. I'll even do it for a discounted rate of £1000/day, so you can bag the extra £250 if you like.

If that's the case then the marketing bod will want to 'productise' you so think how you can do that.

Secondly, the Directors you sit in front of will want to know what you can do for them i.e. lower costs, increase efficiency, whatever, so what will you sell to them?

And that is consultancy proper, rather than contracting, which should mean nice daily rates but not long term work.

                All IMHO of course...

                  Thanks....

I know someone with very similar skills to myself has a 12 month contract for £700 pd.

He pushed for £700 and got it.

So I guess it's whatever the market can stand.

Why not start a company and become a billionaire. Takes a bit longer mind you.

                      Also.....

I believe I have a 'niche' area of expertise.

I've recently been engaged by companies who have recently outsourced their IT and have found that the deal wasn't quite what they expected.

My main roles have been in the area of tightening up SLAs - or specing them and investigating the statement of works - Also I've made significant savings on analysing 'billable work' when it should have been non-billable etc. I've saved some companies many tens of thousands of pounds by doing a little digging - and recharging.

So, I can show I add value and I'm not just a cost to the business.
